Health Benefits Of The Ketogenic Diet

Researchers are finding that a ketogenic diet has numerous health benefits. Dr. Joe Mercola has written about these benefits on his site Mercola (dot) Com. What is a ketogenic diet? It is a diet that causes to body to start burning fat for energy (as opposed to sugar). Or bodies are quite flexible and readily adapt to what we eat.

What is a ketogenic diet?

When we eat lots of refined carbs we stimulate the release of insulin which favors fat storage. Paradoxically, when we limit the carbs to healthy vegetables only and make sure to eat healthy protein too, our bodies start using fat as an energy source. In the process of burning fat for energy small fat fragments called ketone bodies are produced. Some of these enter the urine where they can be measured.

Ketogenic diet advised to help fight cancer

According to Dr. Mercola a ketogenic diet is advised for anyone with cancer or risk of cancer. Cancer’s grow on sugar in the bloodstream. On a ketogenic diet sugar levels are much lower and this helps to starve the cancer. Ketogenic diets have also been shown to help anyone suffering from epileptic seizures.

Burn that belly fat

Finally, by preferentially burning fat, a ketogenic diet helps you to lose that belly fat that so many of us carry around.

Could a ketogenic diet eventually be a “standard of care” drug-free treatment for cancer? Personally, I believe it’s absolutely crucial, for whatever type of cancer you’re trying to address, and hopefully some day it will be adopted as a first line of treatment.

A ketogenic diet calls for eliminating all but non-starchy vegetable carbohydrates, and replacing them with healthy fats and high-quality protein.

The premise is that since cancer cells need glucose to thrive, and carbohydrates turn into glucose in your body, then lowering the glucose level in your blood though carb and protein restriction literally starves the cancer cells into oblivion. Additionally, low protein intake tends to minimize the mTOR pathway that accelerates cell proliferation.

This type of diet, in which you restrict all but non-starchy vegetable carbs and replace them with low to moderate amounts of high-quality protein and high amounts of beneficial fat, is what I recommend for everyone, whether you have cancer or not. It’s a diet that will help optimize your weight and all chronic degenerative disease. Eating this way will help you convert from carb burning mode to fat burning.
